Background

Management Solutions (Qld) initiated the SEGRA National Conference in 1997 to focus on the problems and issues facing regional Australia today, and to propose positive solutions.

The first
SEGRA Conference was held in Geelong & Lorne and since then has been hosted by Beaudesert, Alice Springs, Launceston, Wollongong Illawarra Region, Rockhampton, the Sunshine Coast, Ballarat, Thuringowa, Queanbeyan and the Gold Coast. Dedicated to tackling the current issues facing regional Australia, SEGRA has previously addressed the topics of:

SEGRA 2008

The
SEGRA 2008 Conference, held at Albury, NSW attracted 264 delegates and over 70 speakers presenting on Revitalising Remote Australia, Regional Implications of Climate Change, Indigenous Economic Enterprise, Strategic Financial Planning, Governance, Caring for Country and Emerging Population Dynamics. Workshops held at SEGRA 2008 included: Understanding Regional Economic Development, Economic Development through Community Invigoration, Scenario Planning as well as Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation. Two facilitated study tours were conducted by the host region - Regional Development: developing strategies and partnerships as well as Regional Manufactuing: regionally made, globally available.

The
SEGRA 2008 Conference was themed: Creative Solutins - expect them to be different.

SEGRA 2007

The
SEGRA 2007 Conference, held at Wollongong, Illawarra Region attracted close to 300 delegates and over 80 speakers presenting on Coastal Australia, Australia's Federation, Economic Outlook for Regional Australia, Changing Political, Social and Economic Environment, Regional Cooperation, and Indigenous Business. Workshops held at SEGRA 2007 included: Understanding Regional Economic Development; Unlocking Bright Ideas in Your Region Using Focus Groups; Scenario Planning; Lobbying for Regions: strategies and steps and Climate Change Futures: strategic responses and opportunities - learning from experience as well as the Illawarra State of the Region Summit which concentrated on sustainable business in the Illawarra Region. There was also a Climate Change Conference held concurrently with SEGRA looking at strategies for managing risks and making the most of climate change opportunities in your region.

SEGRA 2006

The
SEGRA 2006 Conference, held at Launceston, Northern Tasmania, attracted over 300 delegates and over 70 speakers presenting on Demographic Change, Regional Resource Issues, Environmental Concerns, Economic Drivers and Governance. Workshops held at SEGRA 2006 included: Regional Economic Policy Development Skills, Unlocking Bright Ideas in your Region using Focus Groups, Regional Climate Change Adaptation, Lobbying for Regions, Developing and Funding Collaborative Research Projects as well as Regional Study Tour, in which participants were shown the beautiful sites of the Launceston, Northern Tasmania Region.

The SEGRA 2005 Conference, held in Rockhampton and Capricorn Region, Central Queensland, attracted
over 270 delegates and over 70 speakers presenting on Strategies for Business Action and Applied Research, Regional Development Strategies, Regional Attractions and Destinations, Regional Governance, Sustainability and Business Practice, Infrastructure and services. This conference due to strong demand continued the "Innovation Showcase" which allowed in-depth presentation and discussion on the "how to's" of regional development. SEGRA 2005 also incorporated the "Climate Proofing Your Region " forum as well as the "Regional Economic Development Policy Skills" workshop.
