Sustainable Economic Growth for Regional Australia

SEGRA 2009 study tours

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is proud to host the 2009 SEGRA Conference. The Study Tours for 2009 reflect Kalgoorlie-Boulder's commitment to becoming a sustainable regional city of the future, and the 'can do' attitude that is synonymous with the Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia. These two study tours will have participants getting hands on with some of the down and dirty sides of Australia's largest outback City.

Participants on this study tour must wear full length trousers, long sleeved shirts and closed in shoes. Failure to comply with these health and safety guidelines will result in delegates not being allowed on sites.

Study Tour 1: "Water Sustainability: the new frontier"

Kalgoorlie-Boulder has no potable water, and all the water that is used is piped up from Perth in a pipeline that is more than 100 years old. Because of this, it is also one of the few local governments in Australia to have 100% reuse of its treated waste water.

Learn more about the history of water in Kalgoorlie-Boulder at the Mt Charlotte Reservoir, before travelling to the KCGM Super Pit to find out how that fits in to the water usage cycle of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. After morning tea at the Super Pit, delegates will travel to the South Boulder Waste Water Treatment Plant to discover where all the water that is used in Kalgoorlie-Boulder ends up – and where it goes from there. From the Waste Water Treatment Plant, delegates will travel to the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Race Club, home of the famous "Race Round" to learn how they keep their race track green for the running of the annual Kalgoorlie Cup.

After lunch at the Race Club, delegates will travel to the Piccadilly Street Dam to learn about the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder's innovative storm water collection dam, before moving on to the Graham Marsh designed Kalgoorlie-Boulder Grass Golf Course. The grass golf course is a joint project between the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Landcorp and the developer. The grassed course, planned to be one of the top 10 desert golf courses in the world, will be kept green using only collected storm water and treated waste water, ensuring its long term sustainability. Delegates will finish the study tour with an overview of Greenview at Karlkurla, a new Landcorp development adjacent to the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Grass Golf Course, which has a strong focus on sustainability.

Study Tour 2: "Mining: exploring new ground"

Mining is the heart of the Goldfields economy, and a residential workforce is essential to ensuring that the communities that develop around mine sites continue to thrive. Discover how local mines are working to combat the "cancer of the bush" – a fly in–fly out workforce, and what the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is doing to encourage people to live, work and play in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, including a demonstraton of Australa's only publicly owner flowrider. In the afternoon delegates will visit one of the City's iconic mines – the KCGM Super Pit.

On a guided tour of this working gold mine, discover what it means for a major mining company to have such a significant presence, and proximity, to the town centre. After touring the mine site, visit the only mine shop front in Western Australia, and one of the few in the world, and learn how the Super Pit Shop has helped to positively influence the relationship between the mine and the community of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
